Let’s get to know each other

The TL;DR version is I’m a health and fitness coach, entrepreneur, and small business owner but more importantly, I’m a husband, a father, and your best fitness friend.

Let’s skip the boring ‘About Me’ page and let’s really get to know each other better.

Pictured above is my beautiful wife, Lindsay, and my son, Liam. This was taken recently while skiing… and it was both mine and Liam’s first time. It was terrifying but he reminded me to be brave.

Before I tell you more about that story, let me tell you a little more about myself. If you follow me and we’ve never met or you’re new to this site, this is a great place to start. Buckle up.

GROWING UP (A LOT)

I grew up like most kids in the 80’s and 90’s; I split my time between eating junk food and sitting in front of a box TV screen and running loose in the neighborhood with little supervision. (It was a different time.)

Athletically, I played baseball, earned a black belt in karate, and played backyard sports with my friends almost every day.

I was always a lean and scrawny kid and mediocre-to-decent at most sports. I was never going to earn a scholarship or play pro sports though.

At 16, I got my first weight set and used it once or twice. I had better things to do.

Then I started down a path of poor choices, skipping class, and an unhealthy relationship with a controlling ex…and with myself. You know, hyper angsty teenage stuff. It was a rough time in my life. We’ve all been there in one way or another.

After deferring my first year of college, things didn’t get much better. It wasn’t until just before the summer of my 21st birthday that I was nudged by a friend of mine to join him at the gym to lift weights. His name was Mike. I owe him my life.

This was the first time in my life that I felt in control. That was MY turning point and the reason I became a coach. It’s become my mission and purpose to share that type of meaningful change with others.

EDUCATION & WORK

I graduated Bridgewater State College the spring of 2008 with a degree in Exercise Physiology and minor in Psychology. During that time I took two internships in physical therapy and one in cardiac rehab.

I started working in a gym and coaching clients that summer and fell in love with changing lives. I couldn’t get enough so I read as much as I could get my hands on, went to workshops, earned certifications, and networked with some of the best in the field.

I started blogging, speaking, and traveling to conferences to enhance my education. I also worked part time in a posture rehab clinic and developed a background in corrective exercise and performance allowing me to nerd out on the biomechanics side.

In the winter of 2013, I opened my first business: a 5,000sf personal training studio in downtown Boston. (VERY downtown, like right next to city hall.). My wife joined me and we had the incredible experience of running the business together and changing hundreds of lives and inspiring young coaches.

Then in 2023 we decided that our family and business goals would be leading us out of the city. We sold the business to two terrific coaches and started the next chapter.

I invested in opening several small group personal training Studios around the city with my business partner, Julian, and run my remote coaching business to continue changing lives through fitness and nutrition.

WHAT I LOVE ABOUT FITNESS

I don’t want to be the strongest, leanest, fastest, or most fit guy in the room. I assume that if you’re here reading this, neither do you. It isn’t about abs, or biceps, or glutes—it’s about a belief that you can get better and control at least one thing in your life.

It’s about showing up to be the best version of yourself for what matters most: family, friends, and loved ones. Not just being better at exercising.

When you use food and exercise this way, it becomes medicine.

By giving ourselves the space to show up and work on ourselves, we’re empowering ourselves to be great in other areas of our lives as well.

My mission and purpose is to give that gift of helping others to believe in themselves and do things they didn’t think were possible.

OTHER THINGS I LOVE

I enjoy lightsaber battles with my son, family EDM dance parties each night before bed, and (still after almost 20 years) staying up with my wife having deep conversations until 2am.

I love mountain biking, surfing, getting out in nature, trying new things, Dungeons & Dragons, travel, sci-fi/fantasy, and learning something new every day.

And I LOVE books. More specifically, reading. My younger self would find this fact hilarious and erroneous but ever since I graduated college I’ve devoured anything I could get my hands on and at one point would finish a book a week. From philosophy to biographies to psychology to sword and sorcery and gritty fantasy.

I believe it’s absolutely absurd that we all exist on this planet in the first place AND that our time here is limited so I love to laugh and spend as much quality time around people I love as possible exploring all that life has to offer. Full out.

That’s enough about me. The rest of this site is dedicated to you.

Steve
